The US is about to see its second-ever 'turbo roundabout' just near a dangerous intersection near the city of Gilroy, San Benito County in California.
Officials describe the roundabout as 'an innovative, new facility design that will improve safety while maintaining traffic flow and efficiency at the intersection'.
'A turbo roundabout operates similar to a regular roundabout but has additional features that reduce the potential for collisions,' the Council of San Benito County Governments said.
This might not sound like a big deal to any Britons reading this, but roundabouts aren't that common in the US – polls suggest that sceptical Americans get confused by the thought of so much spinning around.
Seemingly well aware of this, the California Department of Transportation, also called Caltrans, released a YouTube video explaining how to use the roundabout.
Drivers are recommended to slow down and read the road signs before entering the roundabout to figure out which lane to use.
Three-inch high dividers will guide the drivers around the three-lane roundabout, which is shaped like a Japanese throwing star.
The dividers are there to encourage drivers to stay in their lanes until they exit.
Set to fully open in the Spring, the turbo roundabout has been built by the intersection of state highways 25 and 156.
The video explains which lanes lead to highway 25 south and 156 east or west as drivers approach the turbo roundabout.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the intersection had 45 traffic collisions in 2022, one of which was a fatal accident.
This is about double the rate in similar highways elsewhere in the state.
Officials have spent countless dollars on tweaks to the two routes to help curve accident rates, such as expanding highway 25 or changing traffic signal timings.
Feeling like they're just going in circles, Caltrans partnered with the county for the $14.6 million project.
It's the second turbo roundabout ever opened in the US, with the other being in Jacksonville, Florida, that opened in 2022.
Long favoured by traffic engineers for their ease, safety perks and for helping cut tailpipe emissions, roundabouts first popped up in the UK in the early 1900s but wouldn't be imported across the pond until the 1990s.
Today, it is estimated that there are around 9,000 modern roundabouts in the US, with many more in the planning stages.
However, this falls short of the roughly 25,000 roundabouts in the UK.
After being introduced, several studies have shown public opinion of roundabouts tends to double after a year to about 70%.
Caltrans spokesperson Jim Shivers told Mercury News that he hopes San Benito County locals will warm up to the new roundabout in time.
'In all of these locations where we have installed (roundabouts), the concerns grind to a stop, because they find that the roundabout works,' he told the San Jose newspaper.
'It does make life easier. It does increase safety for the public.'
